Resources

Here's some shit to look into if you're interested. I can email you Barrios's paper if you want it, and can suggest further reading as well.

Academic papers:

Alfred Barrios wrote an excellent paper on hypnosis as cognitive conditioning. In particular, largely a 'conditioned inhibition set'.

Irving Kirsch and a few other guys wrote a good paper on the higher cognitive components in conditioning. We aren't just S-R!!!

Personal web pages:

Dylan Morgan wrote a book on hypnotherapy from a systems point of view. He uses the 'mind as a company' metaphor. He also has more stuff on his website.

John Cleesattel also takes a systems point of view and uses the 'mind as a company' metaphor. http://www.wizardoftrance.com/

wikihyp is Joe Fobe's blog has some good examples of text hypnosis, and other interesting thoughts on hypnosis.

Hard books:

The Oxford Handbook of Hypnosis is a good summary of the literature. I wouldn't call the literature itself "good", but it's a hell of a lot better than nothing.

Provocative Hypnosis is an excellent collection of stories of difficult clients - and the use of provocative therapy to get results.

Monsters and Magical sticks: There's No Such Thing As Hypnosis? Also contains good anecdotes to illustrate the point that hypnosis is no separate magisterium, but rather just a corner case of normal psychology.

Influence isn't about hypnosis specifically, but there is a lot of overlap.

Reality Is Plastic is recommended as a good "how to" book to actually get you out and doing it.

Forums:

Hypnothoughts is a forum of mostly hypnotherapists, and there are some interesting discussions on there, but a lot of uninteresting fluff/insanity.

Uncommonforum has a hypnosis forum that is more focused on hypnosis itself, and has a better concentration of interesting characters than hypnothoughts.
